  PRIMA GUERRA PUNICA (navale antico)
(FIRST PUNIC WAR ancient naval warfare)

Heia, viri, nostrum reboans echo sonet heia!
Aequoreos volvens fluctus ratis audiat heia!
Convulsum remis spumet mare. nos tamen heia!
Vocibus adsiduis litus reduci sonet heia!

Heia,  men, let rumble our Echo like heia!
Sweeping away the waves of the sea let the boat hear heia!
Let the sea foam upset by the oars; we again heia!
Let te coast by the rhythmic voices heia!
(Roman oarmen song)

It is time for some real work. Like an old good naval battle Ben-Hur style!
I choose the Fleet of Battle ruleset, free rules by James Roach, expansion set of the well known Pulse of Battle by Brent Oman, with the addition of some house rules.

261 a. C. La prima guerra punica è appena iniziata.

261 BC The first punic war is ongoing. A small Carthaginian fleet surprises a Roman fleet of an equal size into what, right or wrong, they consider their "home waters". The "inexperienced" Romans must fight for life.
The chronicles of the battle, lost in the mists of time, have not been handed down. But it was certainly a memorable one for those who took part in!
Test Scenario, if all goes well, historical scenarios will follow.

Nell'angolo BLU, l'ammiraglio Falco schiera la flotta cartaginese!

In the BLU side admiral Falco deploys the Carthaginian fleet!

In the RED side, admiral Luca and vice-admiral Gianvittorio deploy the Roman fleet!

The Carthaginians aggressively push their left

The Carthaginians let fly with their catapults and the Roman light trireme squadron is ablaze!

As soon as the punic rigth flank gets within arms reach of the Roman line, the Romans get their chance at revenge: now the Carthaginian quinquiremes are ablaze.

The punic trireme punch trough the roman left raking, ramming hulls and causing general mayhem.

The Carthaginian fleet closes contact ramming, disabling or sinking most of the Roman fleet. The Romans show that what they need is just to stay afloat and within reach of the enemy, because in a flurry of boarding actions most of the Carthaginian ships are captured!

VITTORIA ROMANA!
ROMAN VICTORY!

Heia!

The combination of:
- Carthaginians accustomed to ramming but poor at boarding on fast and light ships more suited to ram actions than boardings
- and vice versa the Romans poor at ramming but strong in the boarding, on heavy ships, with many marines,
Exacerbated the national "specialties" of Rome and Carthage
the Romans could not resist the punic rammings as well as the Carthaginians could do nothing to oppose the Roman boardings. A more balanced choice would have provided a more balanced game.
But the game was still enjoyable.

Heia!

  LA CAMPAGNA DEI SUCCESSORI,
ovvero IL RITORNO DI EUMENE
 SUCCESSORS CAMPAIGN (EUMENE RETURNS!)

Le armate schierate a battaglia!
The armies arrayed for battle!

La compagine eumenide.
The eumenid side.

La cavalleria antigonide, concentrata sul fianco sinistro.
The antigonid chivalry, ammassed on the left flank.

Antigonus is the first to move, as usual.

The Antigonid right hits the Eumenides left with lights and elephants.

Antigonus's phalanx fights its Emenides's counterpart.

Ouch, taking profit of Eumene's lack of movement, Antigonus's chivalry threatens to overwhelm Eumene's left!

Al centro la falange oplitica eumenide contrattacca.
In the center the Eumenides hoplite phalanx counterattacks.

Eumene's left is teetering on the brink of disaster.

La destra ha praticamente cessato di esistere.
The right flank is practically disappeared.

The center is a jumbled mass (mess?) in melee.

No quarter is given or asked, but in the end, the fight is a moral one: one last unit routed and the Eumenides' morale breaks! Antigonus' victory!
