BRIGATA REGINA

 (THE QUEEN BRIGADE)

Per documentarmi su questa figura (avuta in omaggio senza indicazioni di sorta) l’ho prima di tutto cercata nel sito del produttore, Cibo's little Dudes, e l’ho trovata nel gruppo comando sardo “della regina”.

Allora ho googlato “reggimento regina” ed ho trovato questa immagine:

To document this figure (received free but without any info) first of all I looked in the manufacturer website, Cibo's little Dudes, and I found it in the Sardinian Queen Regiment command group.

Then googling “reggimento regina” I found this picture:

C’è un problema, però, wikipedia mi informa che le mostreggiature del reggimento Regina sono BIANCHE. Tanto che il suo motto è:

"Sicut te candidi candidissima Regina"

"Come te candidi, candidissima regina"

Qui qualcosa non va.

But there is an issue, wikipedia, informs me that the 

reggimento Regina distinctions are WHITE. Moreover its motto is:

"Sicut te candidi candidissima Regina"

"candid like you, very white queen"

Ho trovato la soluzione sull’ottimo quaderno L'Armata Sarda nella Prima Guerra d'Indipendenza, 1848-1849. Qui ho scoperto che le caratteristiche peculiari della divisa del 1849 erano: kepi foderato di rosso, pantaloni bigi e mostreggiature cremisi unificate per tutti i reggimenti di fanteria! In effetti i reggimenti si distinguevano solo per il numero sul kepi e quello in figura porta il numero 9!

...ed il nono ed il decimo fanteria erano infatti inquadrati nella brigata Regina.

The solution was found in the good booklet: L'Armata Sarda nella Prima Guerra d'Indipendenza, 1848-1849.  Here I found that the peculiar characteristics of the uniform of 1849 are: kepi lined in red, gray trousers and crimson distinctions, unified for all infantry regiments! In fact the regiments only difference is the number on the kepi and the one in the picture has number 9!

... and the 9th and 10th Infantry Regiments were grouped under the ""Queen Brigade"

Tutto torna. Così la figura è quella di un soldato della Brigata Regina, ma la divisa potrebbe essere quella di una qualsiasi altra brigata di fanteria. Queste informazioni si trovano anche nel museo virtuale dell’Esercito. L’avessi visto prima…

Everything fits. So in the picture we have an infantryman from the Queen Brigade, but the livery could be from any other infantry brigade. This information can be found in the virtual Army museum. I had better seeing it earlier...

L’altra peculiarità è la coccarda italiana tricolore (prima era azzurro Savoia) sul kepì. Con il rosso all’esterno ed il verde all’interno. Ben poco contrasto, con il rosso del kepì. Ma non credo i problemi di pittura dei modellisti più di un secolo dopo siano stati fattori decisivi nella scelta!

The other peculiarity is the Italian tricolor cockade (at first was Savoy blue) on the kepì. With red outside and green inside. Very little contrast with the red of the kepi. But I do not think the modelers painting issues from more than a century in the future had been a deciding factor in the choice!

Roba da perdere la vista. Comunque, ora è finito:
Stuff to lose your sight. However, now it is finished::

Per qualche strano motivo lo scultore si è dimenticato di scolpire le due tasche sul verso della tunica, ciascuna coi suoi 3 bottoni. Comunque niente che non si possa risolvere dipingendo due "parentesi graffe" cremisi e due tocchi di colore metallico (il terzo bottone resta coperto dalla cintura).
For some strange reason the sculptor forgot to sculpt the pockets on the tunic back, each with their 3 buttons. Still nothing that cannot be solved by painting two crimson “braces" and two metallic color touches (the third button is covered by the belt).

Ovviamente, le foto a questa risoluzione mostrano impietosamente le mie impacciate pennellate. Vabbè, visto da un metro di distanza farà un figurone comunque.

Of course, the pictures at this size mercilessly show my clumsy brush strokes. Oh well, seen from a meter away will make a great impression anyway.

Francesco I sembra piuttosto soddisfatto, e presto scopriremo il motivo!

Prosegue il battle report di Marignano.

Purtroppo risulta presto evidente che gli obiettivi svizzeri, demoralizzare 5 corpi francesi o eliminare Francesco I, sono lungi dall’essere raggiunti!

Quickly it is clear that the Swiss targets, demoralizing 5 french corps or eliminating Francis I, are far from being reached!

Il re è al sicuro e si è guardato in cagnesco con la retroguardia svizzera da inizio partita.

The king is well safe, glowering with the Swiss rearguard from the game start.

Effettivamente, l’azione elvetica sul fianco ha avuto un certo successo. Molte batterie di cannoni sono state messe a tacere, e nel processo i lanzi difensori sono stati rotti. L’azione avvolgente sulla sinistra ha travolto due unità dei gendarmes di La Palice, ma ciò non è ancora sufficiente a demoralizzarne il corpo, oppure le artiglierie di Navarro. 

The Helvetic flank action has indeed got some success. Many gun batteries have been silenced, and, in the process, the defending landsknechts corps has been broken.

The enveloping maneuver on the left has overwhelmed two La Palice’s gendarmes units, but this is not yet enough to demoralize the corps or Navarro’s artillery. 

L’eroico capo dell’avanguardia svizzera ha si raggiunto la cima della collina, ma si trova poi circondato da tre lati e non riesce a progredire oltre. Riesce a mettere in rotta 2 o 3 unità di lanzi, ma sono subito rimpiazzate da unità fresche.

The eroic leader of the Swiss vanguard has reached the top of the hill but he is then surrounded from three sides and is not able to progress further. He succeeds in routing 2 or 3 landsknechts units, but they have been substituted with fresh units.

Il tempo stringe, complici due fasi due fuoco per turno, una offensiva ed una difensiva, l’artiglieria francese sta causando devastanti danni al morale svizzero.

The time is running short, accomplice two fire phases, a defensive and an offensive one per turn, the French artillery is causing devastating damage to Swiss morale.

Gettando al vento la cautela, la retroguardia si prepara a lanciare un attacco sulla destra. Ahimè, non ci sarà il tempo di portarlo a termine.

Throwing caution to the wind, the rearguard maneuvers to launch an assault on the right. Alas this is not going to be.

Il morale svizzero è ormai agli sgoccioli (vedi segnalini con la croce svizzera) ed in una sola fase crollerà a zero. Sconfitta!

Swiss morale is running low (see markers with the Swiss cross) and in just one phase it will drop to zero. Defeat!

BOARDGAME

 

Ieri sera, serata sociale al Miles! Sotto l’alto patronato di Corrado, io ed il Gran Capitano Luca abbiamo rigiocato Marignano. Questa volta in formato tradizionale di gioco da tavolo, solo più in grande! Dopo tutto è la Battaglia dei Giganti, no?

Yesterday evening was club night at the Miles! Under Corrado’s patronage me and Great Captain Luca we had a Marignano refight. This time in traditional boardgame format, only bigger! It was named the Battle of the Giants, after all.

Il tiro del dado mi elegge leader degli Svizzeri. A Luca tocca indossare la corazza di Francesco I. I francesi si schierano sulle posizioni storiche, con file di cannoni trincerati dietro le fortificazioni apprestate tra S.Giuliano e Carpianello. Dietro i cannoni i lanzichenecchi, e sulla collina altra fanteria, e poi cavalleria e poi… insomma, ho reso l’idea. Gli Svizzeri entrano da nord, sulla grande strada che porta a Milano, divisi in 3 blocchi: avanguardia, centro e retroguardia.

By the random dice roll I was appointed as the Swiss leader. Luca took the armour of Francis I. the French deploy in the hystorical positions, with lines of guns entrenched behind the fieldworks extending between San Giuliano e Carpianello. Behind the guns landskenechts, and on the hill other infantry, and chivalry and… ok, you got the idea.

The Swiss enter the map from the North, on the road leading from Milan, in 3 blocks: vanguard, center and rearguard. 

Gli svizzeri codardi, molto poco storicamente, decidono di deviare a sinistra verso Carpianello evitando accuratamente i mortiferi campi di tiro dei cannoni schierati di fronte a loro. Questa scampagnata nella versione italiana del bocage richiede buona parte del pomeriggio (in turni di gioco). Ma infine gli svizzeri riescono a disimpegnare canali, rogge, vigneti e fitti coltivi con solo un po’ di disordine tra le fila. La avanguardia ed il corpo principale formano le linee, spianano le picche e caricano in bocca all’artiglieria nemica.

The cowardly Swiss unhistorically decided to drift left towards Carpianello carefully avoiding the killing ground created by the guns arrayed in front of them.

This countryside walk in the Italian version of the bocage took the best part of the afternoon (in game turns). But then, finally the Swiss managed to cross channels, streams, vineyards and heavily cultivated areas with just some disorder. The vanguard and main body formed lines, levelled their pikes and charged into the teeth of the enemy artillery.

Sulla destra francese I gendarmes caricano il fianco elvetico, ma fortunoso tiro d’imboscata di alcuni archibugieri (assieme al veramente sfortunato tiro di morale da parte della gendarmeria) disordinano una delle unità e la carica (normalmente inarrestabile) si ferma contro una quadrato di picche frettolosamente formato.

On the French right the gendarmes charged the Helvetic flank, but some harquebusiers really lucky shooting from ambush (and unlucky morale test on the gendarmes part) disordered one of the units and so the (normally irresistible) charge was stopped by an hastily formed pike square.

Al centro gli svizzeri continuano a spingere e subiscono orrende perdite dai cannoni di Navarro. E qui si dimostra che la specialità svizzera non è il cioccolato e nemmeno gli orologi, ma la capacità di prendere una batosta e tornare per chiederne ancora!

Perfino a ranghi decimati, un paio di unità di picchieri riescono ad eliminare 2 batterie di artiglieria e i difensori lanzichenecchi.

In the center the Swiss pushed on and took telling casualties from Navarro’s guns.  And here was demonstrated that the real Swiss specialty is neither chocolate nor watches, but the ability to take an horrible beating and came back for more!

Even with depleted ranks, a couple of pike units succeeded in eliminating 2 gun batteries and the defending landsknechts.

Mentre le rinnovate spinte della cavalleria francese sulla sinistra svizzera sono sventate dall’afflusso nella mischia di sempre più numerose unità elvetiche; il capo dell’avanguardia svizzera, alla testa di 3 delle migliori unità di picche, riesce ad aprirsi un varco nelle linee nemiche e guadagnare la cima della collina…

While the renewed French chivalry pushes on the Swiss left were again thwarted by more and more Helvetic units coming into the fray; the Swiss vanguard leader, at the head of 3 of the best pike units, punches an hole in the enemy lines and gains the top of the hill…

…solo per essere caricato nel fianco da altra cavalleria e finire circondato dalla fanteria nemica.
Di nuovo un terribile tiro di dadi da parte di Luca (o forse le eroiche gesta svizzere) significano che l’attacco è respinto con forti perdite da parte dei lanzi.

Con le prime ombre della sera che calano sulla scena abbiamo interrotto la partita. La prossima settimana il seguito!

Again some awful dicerolling on the part of Luca (or really heroic feats on the part of the Swiss) meant that the attack was repulsed with heavy losses from the landsknechts.

With the first evening shadows we stopped the game. Next week the follow up!

 PERRY MINIATURES EUROPEAN MERCENARIES

Stranamente sul sito degli ottimi Perry non sono disponibili foto dettagliate delle materozze di questa scatola. Ho trovato una discreta recensione su dakka dakka.

Comunque, per rimediare, vediamo cosa ci ho trovato io :D.

Wierd, on the good Perry twins' site are not present detailed photos of the sprues in this box.

I found a good review on dakka.

Anyway, to stopgap the issue, let’s see what I found myself :D

  

Per cominciare, la scatola contiene 5 materozze: 3 base e 2 comando.

La sprue base contiene 12 figure, 12 teste separate ed abbastanza braccia ed armi per equipaggiare 4 balestrieri, 4 schioppettieri e 6 picchieri.

The box contains 5 sprues, to start with: 3 standard and 2 command sprues. The basic sprue includes 12 "dolls", 12 separate heads and arms and weapons enough to equip 4 crossbowmen, 4 handgunners and 6 pikemen.

  

Le sprue comando contiene 2 figurini e moltissimo armamentario vario: 11 teste, 6 pavesi, un tamburo, spade e teste di alabarda e falcioni per convertire le picche in armi in asta.

The command sprue includes 2 figures and lots of equipments: 11 heads, 6 paveses, a drum, swords and alberds and falchions heads to convert pikes to polearms.

  Ad onore dei Perry c'è da dire che tutte e 14 le figure sono diverse. Considerando il numero di teste e di armamenti disponibili ciò limita al minimo i doppioni (non so voi ma io odio dipingere due volte la stessa miniatura). 

Un buon set in tutto e per tutto. ho montato i 12 pezzi della prima materozza su rondelle ed ho aggiunto alcune teste metalliche dal set "italiano" per dare quel feeling Rinascimentale. Vediamo se riesco ad attaccare le braccia come si deve... 

In favour of the Perry I have to say that all of the 14 figures are different. Accounting of the additional heads and available weapons the doubles are really limited (I don't know your opinion, but I hate painting the same figure twice).

All in all a really good set. I mounted the 12 guys from the standard sprue on washers and added also some metal heads from the "italian set" to add some Renaissance feel. Let's see if they take up arms well...

Ehilà! Benvenuti! Giocattoli nuovi! Così potrò iniziare qualcosa di cui si sentiva davvero il bisogno: un nuovo progetto ludico :). Generalmente richiederà un ridicolo ammontare di tempo senza mai giungere a conclusione. Ma, per il momento, grazie fratelli Perry.

Cibo's Little Dudes  

Con la postazione di combattimento finalmente operativa, è giunto il momento di darsi da fare. Quale migliore occasione per collaudare i pennelli, prima di cimentarsi in più ardue imprese, che dipingere il campione omaggio ricevuto da Cibo?

With the battlestation finally operative, it is the time to start some hard work. What a better opportunity to test the brushes, before engaging in the most arduous enterprises, than start painting the free sample figures from Cibo?

Primo lotto pronto, signore! Mi piace incollare le figure su tappi di bottiglia col vinavil, per meglio maneggiarle. C'è da dire che i tappi di sughero sono meglio dei sintetici anche per questo impiego. L'omino sul tappo di gomma continuava a staccarsi.

First batch in position, sir! I like to attach the figures on corks with white glue for an improved handling. I have to say that cork caps are better also in this application. The figure on the synthetic one kept falling all the time.

Fondo nero o fondo bianco? Sarò Salominico ed userò una base grigia! D'altronde dovrò pure usare quella bomboletta di German Grey Tamiya, no? :D

Black undercoat or white undercoat? Well, I will be Solomonic and use a grey undercoat! Let's put to use that Tamiya German Grey can! :D.

Per gli altri due è meglio rimediare con un colore meno "abbronzato"

For the two other it is better go for a less "sun tanned" color
