Lo scontro é senza quartiere, ma alla fine é un confronto morale: un'ultima unitá va in rotta ed il morale eumenide crolla! Vittoria di Antigono!

No quarter is given or asked, but in the end, the fight is a moral one: one last unit routed and the Eumenides' morale breaks! Antigonus' victory! 

 BATTAGLIA di GABIENE (o quasi)

 GABIENE BATTLE (almost)

Venerdì scorso, al miles, l'amico Luca, "il gran capitano", ha reinscegnato per noi la Battaglia di Gabiene  tra i Successori di Alessandro Magno Antigono Monoftalmo (il Guercio per gli amici) ed Eumene di Cardia, lealista, ma sconfitto per tradimento nello storico scontro.

Il regolamento è "Pulse of Battle" un "card driven". 

Last Friday, at the miles, our good friend Luca, "the great captain", re-staged for us the battle of Gabiene between Alexander's Successors Antigonus Monophthalmus (aka One Eye) and Eumenes of Cardia, loyalist, but defeated by treachery in the historical fight.

The ruleset is the card driven "Pulse of Battle".

Sul lato sinistro, gli Antigonidi. In primo piano tutta la cavalleria, poi la falange dietro lo schermo degli psiloi, gli elefanti, la falange oplitica ed una solitaria unità leggera .

On the left side, the Antigonids. In the foreground the whole of the cavalry, then the phalanx screened by psiloi, the elephants, the hoplite phalanx and a lone light unit.

  

Sul lato destro, gli Eumenidi. In primo piano la gran parte della cavalleria, poi bande di feroci traci e la falange oplitica coperta dagli psiloi, quindi la falange. L'ala destra è costituita dagli elefanti, cavalleria leggera e peltasti. 

On the right, the Euminids. In the foreground the most part of the cavalry, then warbands of ferocius thracians and the hoplite phalanx covered by psiloi, then the phalanx. The right wing is formed by the elephants, light cavalry and peltasts.

Antigono, ovviamente, prende il comando del centro e della sua falange. 

Antigonus, obviously, takes command of the center and his own phalanx.

Eumenes, affida il comando del centro al suo subordinato di maggior talento, ed assume il ruolo di comandante in capo. 

Eumenes, gives command of the center to his most talented subordinate, and takes the role of Commander in Chief.

Antigono, complici le carte, ordina una avanzata generale. In particolare l'ala destra di cavalleria si spinge così in avanti da arrivare a tiro di freccia dalla sua controparte eumenide. 

Antigonus, accomplices the cards, orders a general advance. The right wing cavalry in particular advances so far to get at bow shoot of her eumenid counterparts.

Eumene rifiuta il fianco destro facendo avanzare su quel lato i leggeri. Gli elefanti eumenidi caricano quelli di Antigono, sulla carta più forti, in pratica neutralizzandosi a vicenda per il resto della partita. 

Eumenes refuses the right flank by advancing the lights on that side. The euminid elephants charge those of Antigonus, theorically stronger, in practice neutralizing each other for the rest of the game.

Antigono spinge il suo affondo e la battaglia delle truppe leggere comincia. Uno scambio di proiettili prima ed una mischia dopo dimostrano che la qualità degli antigonidi è superiore. Gli eumenidi si ritirano dietro gli opliti e una unità di frombolieri preferisce addirittura abbandonare del tutto il campo! 

Antigonus pushes on his attack and the light troops battle starts. First an exchange of missiles and then a melee shows that the quality of the antigonid lights is better. The eumenids retire behind the hoplite phalanx and a slinger units prefers to quit the field altogether!

  

Un righello laser non può mancare nell'arsenale dell'arbitro moderno. Molto pratico per verificare l'arco di carica in un batter d'occhi!

A laser ruler should always be present in the modern referee toolbox. Useful to check charge arc in the blink of an eye!

Con le carte movimento apparentemente scomparse dal mazzo di Eumene, l'iniziativa è nelle mani di Antigono che se ne avvantaggia. La cavalleria antigonide carica la sinistra eumenide, la falange investe gli opliti mentre gli opliti di Antigono avanzando respingono le truppe leggere dell'ala destra. In alto a sinistra gli elefanti continuano imperterriti la loro mischia, o forse si stanno accoppiando, chi può dirlo?

With movement cards apparently disappeared from the Eumenes's deck the initiative is in the hands of Antigonus that takes the advantage. The antigonids' cavalry charges the eumenids' left, the phalanx smashes in the hoplites and Antigonus's own hoplites advance pushing back the light troops of the right flank. In the top left the elephants continue undeterred their melee, or perhaps they are mating, who knows?

Lo scontro tra opliti e falangiti è violento ma equilibrato, con perdite date e prese.

The fight between hoplite and phalangites is rude but balanced, with losses both inflicted and received.

 Improvvisamente, una delle unità oplitiche cede! Ora la compagine degli opliti non è più considerata falange.

Suddenly one of the hoplite units gives way! Now the hoplites are no more considered a phalanx

  

 Sulla destra di Antigono uno scontro egualmente violento si sviluppa tra opposte cavallerie. La faccenda qui non va così male per Eumene.

On the right of Antigonus an equally violent struggle erupts between the opposing cavalry. The fight is not going that bad for Eumenes here. 

Mentre la falange eumenide manovra in posizione sul fianco antigonide, Eumene ed il comandante del centro decidono di prendere in mano la situazione: si uniscono ciascuno ad una delle unità dei vacillanti opliti e guidano il contrattacco.

While the eumenid phalanx manouvers on the antigonid side, Eumenes and the center commander decide to take the situation in hand: they each join one of the wavering hoplite units and launch a counterattack.

  L'azione ha un certo successo e la falange di Antigono si ferma e comincia a perdere terreno, ma nel climax dello scontro Eumene viene colpito da un proiettile vagante di frombola e muore! Un mormorio si leva dalle fila dei suoi soldati.

The action is quite succesful and the phalanx of Antigonus is stopped in its tracks, but at the climax of the fight Eumenes is struck dead by a stray slingshot! A murmur is heard coming from his army.

Il generale del centro prende il ruolo di comandante dell'esercito e continua la lotta. Sulla sinistra degli eumenidi la cavalleria antigonide è respinta ed una unità è perfino distrutta. La falange antigonide sta iniziando a sgretolarsi ma l'esercito di Eumene ha ormai perso la volontà di combattere. Vengono girate due carte Morale dell'Esercito di fila ed il secondo test è fallito. La battaglia si conclude con la vittoria di Antigono.

The center general takes on the role of army commander and continues the fight. On the eumenid left the antigonid chivalry is even repulsed and one unit destroied. The antigonid phalanx is starting to crumble but the army of Eumenes has lost the will to fight. Two army morale cards are turned in a row and the second test is failed. The battle is an Antigonid victory.

Una partita molto interessante ed equilibrata con due armate pressoché speculari. Il fatto che buona parte delle carte movimento e tutte le carte morale siano finite sul fondo del mazzo di "Eumene" ha fatto si che l'armata lealista sia rimasta al palo per buona parte della partita. Ciò non di meno il ben condotto attacco antigonide ha ricevuto una inaspettata resitenza, nonostante una serie di tiri orrendi da parte eumenide. Alla fine Antigono ha comunque dominato la partita ed ha colto una ben meritata vittoria, quasi replicando il risultato storico. Ma se Eumene potesse tornare dall'Ade per combattere di nuovo le cose potrebbero anche andare diversamente.

Really interesting game with two almost mirror armies. The fact that the most part of the movement cards and all morale cards went at the bottom of "Eumenes's" deck meant that the loyalist army remained at the pole for the good part of the game. Nonetheless the well managed antigonid attack met with unespected resistance, a number of abismal rolls not withstanding on the eumenid part. in the end Antigonus dominated the game and got a well deserved victory, almost duplicating the historical result. But in case Eumenes could come back from the Hades and fight again the result could well be different.

 BRIGATA REGINA

 (THE QUEEN BRIGADE)

Per documentarmi su questa figura (avuta in omaggio senza indicazioni di sorta) l’ho prima di tutto cercata nel sito del produttore, Cibo's little Dudes, e l’ho trovata nel gruppo comando sardo “della regina”.

Allora ho googlato “reggimento regina” ed ho trovato questa immagine:

To document this figure (received free but without any info) first of all I looked in the manufacturer website, Cibo's little Dudes, and I found it in the Sardinian Queen Regiment command group.

Then googling “reggimento regina” I found this picture:

1849 - Soldato del reggimento di fanteria "Regina".

C’è un problema, però, wikipedia mi informa che le mostreggiature del reggimento Regina sono BIANCHE. Tanto che il suo motto è:

"Sicut te candidi candidissima Regina"

"Come te candidi, candidissima regina"

Qui qualcosa non va.

But there is an issue, wikipedia, informs me that the 

reggimento Regina distinctions are WHITE. Moreover its motto is:

"Sicut te candidi candidissima Regina"

"candid like you, very white queen"

Ho trovato la soluzione sull’ottimo quaderno L'Armata Sarda nella Prima Guerra d'Indipendenza, 1848-1849. Qui ho scoperto che le caratteristiche peculiari della divisa del 1849 erano: kepi foderato di rosso, pantaloni bigi e mostreggiature cremisi unificate per tutti i reggimenti di fanteria! In effetti i reggimenti si distinguevano solo per il numero sul kepi e quello in figura porta il numero 9!

...ed il nono ed il decimo fanteria erano infatti inquadrati nella brigata Regina.

The solution was found in the good booklet: L'Armata Sarda nella Prima Guerra d'Indipendenza, 1848-1849.  Here I found that the peculiar characteristics of the uniform of 1849 are: kepi lined in red, gray trousers and crimson distinctions, unified for all infantry regiments! In fact the regiments only difference is the number on the kepi and the one in the picture has number 9!

... and the 9th and 10th Infantry Regiments were grouped under the ""Queen Brigade"

Tutto torna. Così la figura è quella di un soldato della Brigata Regina, ma la divisa potrebbe essere quella di una qualsiasi altra brigata di fanteria. Queste informazioni si trovano anche nel museo virtuale dell’Esercito. L’avessi visto prima…

Everything fits. So in the picture we have an infantryman from the Queen Brigade, but the livery could be from any other infantry brigade. This information can be found in the virtual Army museum. I had better seeing it earlier...

L’altra peculiarità è la coccarda italiana tricolore (prima era azzurro Savoia) sul kepì. Con il rosso all’esterno ed il verde all’interno. Ben poco contrasto, con il rosso del kepì. Ma non credo i problemi di pittura dei modellisti più di un secolo dopo siano stati fattori decisivi nella scelta!

The other peculiarity is the Italian tricolor cockade (at first was Savoy blue) on the kepì. With red outside and green inside. Very little contrast with the red of the kepi. But I do not think the modelers painting issues from more than a century in the future had been a deciding factor in the choice!

Roba da perdere la vista. Comunque, ora è finito:
Stuff to lose your sight. However, now it is finished::

Per qualche strano motivo lo scultore si è dimenticato di scolpire le due tasche sul verso della tunica, ciascuna coi suoi 3 bottoni. Comunque niente che non si possa risolvere dipingendo due "parentesi graffe" cremisi e due tocchi di colore metallico (il terzo bottone resta coperto dalla cintura).
For some strange reason the sculptor forgot to sculpt the pockets on the tunic back, each with their 3 buttons. Still nothing that cannot be solved by painting two crimson “braces" and two metallic color touches (the third button is covered by the belt).

Ovviamente, le foto a questa risoluzione mostrano impietosamente le mie impacciate pennellate. Vabbè, visto da un metro di distanza farà un figurone comunque.

Of course, the pictures at this size mercilessly show my clumsy brush strokes. Oh well, seen from a meter away will make a great impression anyway.

 BOARDGAME - episode 2

Francesco I sembra piuttosto soddisfatto, e presto scopriremo il motivo!

Prosegue il battle report di Marignano.

Purtroppo risulta presto evidente che gli obiettivi svizzeri, demoralizzare 5 corpi francesi o eliminare Francesco I, sono lungi dall’essere raggiunti!

Quickly it is clear that the Swiss targets, demoralizing 5 french corps or eliminating Francis I, are far from being reached!

Il re è al sicuro e si è guardato in cagnesco con la retroguardia svizzera da inizio partita.

The king is well safe, glowering with the Swiss rearguard from the game start.

Effettivamente, l’azione elvetica sul fianco ha avuto un certo successo. Molte batterie di cannoni sono state messe a tacere, e nel processo i lanzi difensori sono stati rotti. L’azione avvolgente sulla sinistra ha travolto due unità dei gendarmes di La Palice, ma ciò non è ancora sufficiente a demoralizzarne il corpo, oppure le artiglierie di Navarro. 

The Helvetic flank action has indeed got some success. Many gun batteries have been silenced, and, in the process, the defending landsknechts corps has been broken.

The enveloping maneuver on the left has overwhelmed two La Palice’s gendarmes units, but this is not yet enough to demoralize the corps or Navarro’s artillery. 

L’eroico capo dell’avanguardia svizzera ha si raggiunto la cima della collina, ma si trova poi circondato da tre lati e non riesce a progredire oltre. Riesce a mettere in rotta 2 o 3 unità di lanzi, ma sono subito rimpiazzate da unità fresche.

The eroic leader of the Swiss vanguard has reached the top of the hill but he is then surrounded from three sides and is not able to progress further. He succeeds in routing 2 or 3 landsknechts units, but they have been substituted with fresh units.

Il tempo stringe, complici due fasi due fuoco per turno, una offensiva ed una difensiva, l’artiglieria francese sta causando devastanti danni al morale svizzero.

The time is running short, accomplice two fire phases, a defensive and an offensive one per turn, the French artillery is causing devastating damage to Swiss morale.

Gettando al vento la cautela, la retroguardia si prepara a lanciare un attacco sulla destra. Ahimè, non ci sarà il tempo di portarlo a termine.

Throwing caution to the wind, the rearguard maneuvers to launch an assault on the right. Alas this is not going to be.

Il morale svizzero è ormai agli sgoccioli (vedi segnalini con la croce svizzera) ed in una sola fase crollerà a zero. Sconfitta!

Swiss morale is running low (see markers with the Swiss cross) and in just one phase it will drop to zero. Defeat!
