BATTAGLIA DI CARRI A SIDI REZEGH
(TANK BATTLE AT SIDI REZEGH)

21-22 NOVEMBRE 1941

 e si lancia all'assalto!

TANK BATTLE AT SIDI REZEGH

21-22 NOVEMBRE 1941

The other Friday night was wagaming night at the Miles club. With the "milites" Claudio, Luca and Riccardo we experienced Field of Battle ruleset for World War the second.
The scenario, prepared by umpire Claudio, was loosely based on the fighting around Sidi Rezegh's airport  during Operation Crusader.
The defense of the airport was entrusted to elements of the British 7th Armored Division (controlled by me and Luca), while the 21st Panzer Division (under the command of Riccardo) had to try and win the position.

The battlefield viewed from the English side. The trenches around the airport appear empty because the troops occupying them have yet to be identified by the attacker.

The first blood is for the British who manage to pull off a HIT
on the advancing African Korp's companies.

After a ferocious firefight the british seem in a pretty bad shape.

To ease the pressure on the allied left appears a British armored brigade
that, for now, balances out the panzers just appeared on the horizon.

The pressure at the center increases, fortunately the British manage to switch the troops of the 1st company, for those of the 3rd Co., rushed from the right flank.
The breakthrough, for now, is averted.

On the left, the clash between the tanks sees the panzers succeed in eliminating a British tank company. The quality of the enemy tanks appears to be much higher.

Queen gambit on the British side! A german armored brigade suddenly appears after a long side march. It is not going well for His Majesty's subjects...

These models are really nice...

After an exchange of blows, the British hold out, but they must retreat towards the airport

Meanwhile the German infantry pushes forward the attack on the British left.
The first battalion, barricaded in the depression and in the trenches, resists.

The British succeeds in inflicting heavy losses to the attackers.

The German pulls out his trump card: a veteran pioneer company (half-track in the middle)...

...and unleashes the assault!

but the 3rd company of the 2nd Battalion, evidently formed by true badasses, thwarts also this threat.

The tanks continue to clash, the desert is now littered with allied tanks damaged or on fire, and it seems that the British are low on ammunition (they had not seen a fire card in a while). Nevertheless, the British manage to maintain a semblance of defensive line and even to push off the field a german armored company (see the Pz.III just off the table)!

And it is on this line that we called off. The game is probably of the Germans. But going on playing who can say what outcome would have been? :)
