256 a. C. CAPO ECNOMO (bis)
 256 B.C. CAPE ECNOMUS (refight)

In preparing the naval battle before the summer holidays (here the original scenario) I had considered that the Roman strength was in their boarding skills, while the Carthaginians' one is their seamanship skills (ie ram and sink the enemy). It seemed, however, that light Punic ships were a bit too disadvantaged in this struggle, therefore, to restore the balance, I had upgraded their Marines a bit.

The evidence shows though  (you can see here what had happened) that the Carthaginians offer quite a match in boarding actions for the Roman marines (though not quite at par). And maybe it was just the Romans who needed some help, despite the historical results of the battle. So I reverted to the official statistics in the Fleet of Battle rules. I also pimped Roman flagships giving them an edge in the distance shot.

Here below the new tables:

The Punic "stratagem"
One of the key elements of the battle is the Carthaginian plan to separate the Roman fleet (ploy eventually resolved against the Carthaginians themselves). To make the scene look a little like the historic clash was therefore necessary to incorporate certain rules to enact this strategy. In practice the rule did not work very well, with the Romans forced to behave not quite logically (to chase some enemies when there were others much closer and dangerous). It is therefore quite necessary a review:

Punic Stratagem: "the Carthaginian deck includes 3 STRATAGEM cards. When one of these cards is drawn, the Carthaginian player has the option to move backward an entire move the units of Amilcar's squadron ending the move bow to the nearest enemy. If Amilcar takes advantage of this opportunity, Roman units in the two consuls squadrons must pursue the nearest Punic unit in Amilcar's squadron for a whole movement segment, at the maximum possible speed. The consular squadron is under no obligation to execute this move if: the squadron is already engaged with units other than those of Amilcar or if there are other Punic units within 8 ", in the latter case, may instead move to engage the nearest units.

Discard the card after use. If the Carthaginian player chooses not to retreat, the STRATAGEM card, and all following ones, no longer have any effect."

L'azione

The action
In spite of the best intentions the action went in a quite unespected way. The BRIEFING can be found in the Miles Gloriosus blog.
